When you are enjoying the Habitat Authority Preserve, be sure to bring your iPhone, camera, camera-ready binoculars, or smartphone to capture a winning photograph. There are four categories in this contest: Flora (Plants), Fauna (Animals), Landscapes, and Recreation.

Photo Requirements:

1. Photographs must be in digital format. Only online entries will be eligible. No print or film submissions will be accepted. The photograph need not be taken with a digital camera; scans of negatives, transparencies, or photographic prints are acceptable.

2. Contest entrants may submit a maximum of three (3) photographs. No more than one (1) photograph may be submitted by anyone in a single category.

3. Photographs taken by persons under 18 years of age (“minor”) must be entered by the minor’s guardian or parent on behalf of the minor. The name of the minor photographer must be included on the entry form. Attribution will be given to the minor.

4. Entrants must submit all information required of them on the entry form including name of the entrant (or name of minor photographer including name of the parent/guardian entrant if applicable), email and phone number to contact the entrant (or the parent/guardian of the entrant).

5. All digital files must be 8 megabytes or smaller, must be in JPEG or TIF format and must be at least 1,600 pixels wide (if a horizontal image) or 1,600 pixels tall (if a vertical image). The photographs must be saved in RGB mode (not CMYK). The Photograph Title must contain the following labels: Entrant’s Last Name, Entrant’s First Name, Location of Photograph, and Contest Category separated by a space or underscore (i.e., Smith_Jane_PowderCanyon_Recreation.jpg).

6. Photographs must have been taken within two (2) years before the date of entry and may not previously have won an award in any other Photography Contest. They must be taken on the Puente Hills Preserve. Entries will be accepted only from persons who live in Los Angeles County or Orange County, California.

7. The photograph, in its entirety, must be a single work of original material. By entering the Contest, entrant represents, acknowledges, and warrants that the submitted photograph is an original work created solely by the entrant, that the photograph does not infringe on the copyrights, trademarks, moral rights, rights of privacy/publicity or intellectual property rights of any person or entity, and that no other party has any right, title, claim, or interest in the photograph. Any photograph entered showing a person’s or persons’ face must also be accompanied with a release signed by the person(s) photographed, or their parent or guardian, authorizing permission to enter the photograph and Habitat Authority’s use of the photograph(s) as described below. 8. The photograph must not, in the sole and unfettered discretion of the Habitat Authority contain obscene, provocative, defamatory, sexually explicit, or otherwise objectionable or inappropriate content.

9. The caption must be complete, accurate, and sufficient to convey the circumstances in which the photograph was taken. Disguising or misrepresenting the origin of your content is cause for disqualification.

10. Watermarks are not acceptable. If we do not receive a non-watermarked version of the entry within ten (10) days following its request, the entry will be disqualified.

11. By entering the Contest, entrant hereby grants to the Habitat Authority a nonexclusive, worldwide, royalty-free license to download, publicly display, reproduce, distribute, modify, and transmit, the photograph(s) submitted for the Contest in any manner related to the Contest, the Habitat Authority or its anniversary event. Habitat Authority may use the photograph(s) for the benefit of the Habitat Authority but will not sell any photograph for profit. Photographs submitted in the Contest automatically become the property of the Habitat Authority and cannot be acknowledged or returned.

Contest Judging
Contest consists of two (2) rounds of evaluation:
• Round 1: The Judges panel will select ten (10) entries in each category from among all eligible entries based on the following criteria (1) creativity; (2) photographic quality; (3) genuineness/authenticity of the content. The entries selected in Round 1 will proceed to Round 2.
• Round 2: The top ten (10) who are selected by July 10 will then be required to bring in a 8” x 10” photo individually matted on a 11” x 14” solid colored single mat with the photographers name on the back of the mat. In this round, the Judges panel will collectively select a First Place Winner in each Category. Decisions of the Judges are final and binding.
• People’s Choice Award: All photo submissions will be eligible for the People’s Choice Award. The photo with the most public online votes will win. Voting is free and members of the public are only allowed to vote once during the contest. Voting starts June 15, 2014 and closes at 11:59 PM on July 1, 2014.
• Winners will be chosen on or around August 1, 2014, and be notified by email.
• A cash prize of $100 will be given to the winner in each category as well as the People’s Choice Award. The runner up in each category will receive an acknowledgement from the Habitat Authority and a promotional item related to the 20th Anniversary event.
