My love for photography goes back 50 years. I built my first box camera at age 10. My father, Philip Grushkin was a world renowned book designer, calligrapher, had me printing B&W images and photographing portraits on a Zeiss Conterax Bullseye camera. My favorite lens was that Sonnar 90mm 2.8 lens, Wow! I was later asked by the Grateful Dead to document their fans in the early 80’s and went on to publish the very successful book “Grateful Dead, Official Book of then Deadheads. While running Photogenesis Photography in La Honda CA, I worked as a carpenter resurrecting barns and pursued my love for piano as I did a west coast tour with a blues band. I moved to Durango Colorado in 1992 raising two boys. We built a totally off the grid home and photo studio. The story about our land and my work as a photographer is detailed on my web site: www.grushkin.com.

Today I work primarily as a portrait photographer. Whether on location or in the studio, I strive to get to the heart of ones personality and capture that in a humble, candid, humoristic, reflective and honest way. My clients always appreciate the almost invisible way I conduct myself in a photo assignment, allowing the subject to guide the flow of images, as this photographer silently steals moments. I believe in simplicity in a photograph, the less elements the better.

Digital photography has expanded the range of tones and focus, beyond what the human eye and brain are used to seeing . My rule of thumb for budding photographers is to break a photo down to its simplest elements for its greatest impact. Shoot manual and bracket. And try, try, try not to keep looking at the back of the camera. That one amazing image might have crossed your lens while you were distracted.

I can be reached through e-mail, jonas@grushkin.com or Facebook: Grushkin Photography or at my studio: 970-259-2718. I am available for location work on a moments notice and would love to discover new personalities in unusual places for that creative spark!

I appreciate your time, hearing my story and my love for photography! I would love to hear from you!

Featured Photographer of the Month – July 2014 – Stephanie Dubsky Photography

Featured Photographer Of The Month: Stephanie Dubsky

Family Beach Portraits are my specialty. I am fortunate to have been born and grow up on Florida’s Southwest Coast where the beaches make a stunning backdrop for gorgeous portraits!

Stephanie Dubsky Photography - A proud MorePhotos Client

Portraits on the beach may look simple enough but are anything but. Besides the family dynamics which always keep portrait photographers on their toes, there are many other factors involved with creating memorable Family Beach Portraits.

First of course, is the light. We start around an hour before sunset for the “sweet light”’. A few clouds can soften the light and ad a more dramatic, colorful look. There are times, especially in the winter, where the sky is clear and the bright sun turns everyone’s skin orange! That’s where my studio light comes in to help fill shadows and balance the color a bit.

At sunset the light is changing by the second, and our set ups and camera settings need to continuously change as well.
Other challenges include: wind, sand, background people and beach furniture, thunderstorms, posing people on the sand (not everyone is that limber), and the one thing I won’t take chances with, lightning.

That is just the “photography” part of my work. There’s scheduling, advertising ,networking, post production, retouching, archiving, labs, shipping, finances, taxes, website maintenance, festivals, social media, bookkeeping, emails, phone calls, studio maintenance, camera and computer updates and maintenance and continuous education.

I created my company in 2006 and it has been my fulltime job for over eight years. I now have three part time employees. One thing that help keeps me motivated is the positive feedback I receive from my clients. As much as I love my work, I do make time to relax or play! It’s all about balance.

Hot Off the Press – What’s Coming from WD WEB!

Check out what we’re up to!

We Live, Work & Play at Grand Traverse Bay!

We’re so busy with running the MorePhotos arm of WD Web, that sometimes we forget how this company started out – as a printed wedding publication guide that eventually became an online resource for engaged brides-to-be looking for tips on planning their big day.  The name was Wedding Details (hence the WD Web), and still exists today at WeddingDetails.Com.  This is one of the many major projects that is going to get an overhaul in the coming months by our development and design teams.  For those of you who are MorePhotos clients, don’t forget that you can add your business listing absolutely free by contacting us today!

So, now that we’ve reminisced a bit – what’s in store for the future?  Lots!  We’re working on the following projects, some fun, some necessary, all creative and innovative; requiring energy from our entire staff in different ways based on their individual strengths…

  1. PhotoScramble

It’s been around in beta mode for a while now, and some of you may have used the platform to host a photo contest as a form of brand promotion or customer engagement.  Just this week our development staff went back to work on this project during the wee hours of the morning with a renewed effort at developing a truly one-of-a-kind software for private label photo contest promotions.  There are too many features to list in this post, but stay tuned and be one of the first to try out the software once it’s complete! p.s. You can also use it now for free!

  2. Wedding Details – Once this site is redesigned, it will be a WEALTH of knowledge for those looking to plan an outstanding wedding!  It will also be a fantastic place to advertise your photography (or other service) business, using targeted geographic ads and beautiful premium banner placements.
  3. HoneyMoon Details – another online resource (the title is self explanatory), that is getting some touch-ups.
  4. MorePhotos – Of course you know this one!  We’re always working on (and will continue to work on) your eCommerce platform for displaying and selling your beautiful images online.  Here’s a laundry list of stuff in the works:
  • Green Screen Technology – if you shoot green screen you’ll be able to offer multiple background options right in the MorePhotos shopping cart!
  • Auto Fulfillment – customer orders can go right from the check-out step to the digital printing lab, cutting out a step for you!
  • Image Overlay – when selling products likes mugs and t-shirts you’ll be able to see a preview of what the product will look like with your image on it.
  • New website layouts will be coming out regularly – so stay tuned!

And if that’s not enough – we’re also working on the beginning stages of launching a gear line called Photolovin’ (Photo Gear with Attitude), which will start with hip t-shirts and hats for all people that love photography, but may eventually offer private label and even crowd-sourced design.

Have any questions?  Reach out to us anytime.  And as always, thanks for your business!
